W&M’s Thornton, Tarpey receive CAA honors

BALTIMORE (WAVY) – William & Mary’s all-time leading scorer, Marcus Thornton, was named the Player of the Year Colonial Athletic Association.

Thornton, becomes the first player in school history to be named the conference’s top player.

And another first, junior Terry Tarpey was selected the CAA Defensive Player of the Year. This is only the fifth time in CAA history that a team had both the players of the year and defensive player of the year in the same season.

The Tribe is in Baltimore for the CAA Tournament, where coach Tony Shaver’s team is the top seed. It’s the same story every year for William & Mary, will this be the year the Tribe finally make the NCAA Tournament. They are one of five original NCAA programs to never make it to the tournament.

The Tribe opens play Saturday at 12:00, but coach Shaver is not about to look ahead to the championship game.

“If you start thinking about a championship game you will not get there,” Shaver said. “I’ve always said from my years of coaching that I really believe the first day is the toughest day to win whether you are a first seed or a tenth seed it does not matter, it’s the toughest game to win in a tournament.”

William and Mary will play the winner of the game between Towson and Elon.
