Police: Gilmerton Bridge reopens after malfunction

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake police confirm the Gilmerton Bridge has reopened after being stuck open Friday evening.

Police dispatchers say they got the first call about the bridge gates being stuck around 8:20 p.m. Chesapeake police spokeswoman Dorien Boykin said the exact cause is unknown, at this time, but it was a bridge malfunction.

The bridge, which carries Military Highway, reopened just after 9 p.m.

A number of WAVY viewers have called into our newsroom and reported traffic congestion in both directions at the bridge.
