HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton City Schools officials are warning parents about a fake Twitter account that sent out a tweet last week announcing school would be closed because of the weather.
Diana Gulotta with Hampton City Schools told WAVY.com someone believed to be a student created a fake Twitter account in the name of Hampton City Schools Superintendent Linda Shifflette. The account announced on Feb. 24 that school would be closed on Feb. 25.
Gulotta said the superintendent received a call saying she had canceled school, but at that point, they had not made that decision. Coincidentally, school was canceled later that day due to inclement weather. The superintendent then sent out a tweet saying there was a fake account.
The Hampton City Schools Twitter account also tweeted this warning about the fake account.
Gulotta said the fake account left out the ‘i’ in their Twitter handle that Shifflette has in her name. The account only had two followers, but the tweet was retweeted 20 times, Gulotta said. Twitter suspended the fake account on Tuesday, March 3.
