NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance has tapped a former admiral to lead the agency.

Kevin Sweeney has been named the alliance’s interim president and chief operating officer.

The alliance markets the entire Hampton Roads region as a place for new and expanding business to locate.

Sweeney will start his new job on Monday. He retired in the Navy in 2014 as a rear admiral after leading Carrier Strike Group Ten. During his career, he also commanded a destroyer squadron and served as the commanding officer of the USS Cole after the 2002 terrorist attack on the ship. Sweeney was responsible for shepherding the Cole’s return to fleet operations.

He also served as the executive officer at U.S. Central Command, among other assignments.
