CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake police have arrested a driver they believe was involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash Friday evening.
Witnesses told police a four-door Mercedes and Ford SUV were traveling east in the 4200 block of Portsmouth around 5:50 p.m. That’s when the Mercedes rear ended the Ford, pushing the SUV into oncoming traffic and causing a collision with a westbound Jeep Cherokee.
Chesapeake police spokeswoman Kelly O’Sullivan said the passenger in the Ford was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she died. Police have identified the victim as Jamie Freeman, 29, of Suffolk.
About 10 minutes after the crash, Portsmouth police found the suspect vehicle and driver in the 400 block of Robin Road. The suspect, 72-year-old Audrey Murphy of Portsmouth, was charged with DUI, hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter.
Murphy is being held in the Chesapeake City Jail without bond.
