HRT bus involved in crash with motorized wheelchair

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – A man riding a motorized wheelchair against traffic was struck by an HRT bus Saturday night.

Chesapeake Police Public Information Officer Leo Kosinski confirmed that crews were dispatched at 6:47 p.m. to the scene in the area of Bainbridge Blvd. and Holly Avenue.

According to police, the bus driver saw the person traveling on the street in the direction of the bus and swerved at the last second to avoid a direct collision with the motorized wheelchair.

The wheelchair struck the right side of the bus.

The man on the wheelchair was transported to Chesapeake General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

HRT spokesperson Tom Holden confirmed that this was the Route 58 bus and that the bus driver was replaced as is protocol following an accident.

There were three passengers on board the bus and none were injured.

Police confirmed that the man operating the motorized wheelchair was cited for traveling against traffic.
