NSU coach Latrell Scott talks about first recruiting class

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – On the job for less than two months, Latrell Scott wrapped up his first national signing day as head coach of Norfolk State.

“It’s obviously a very exciting day, but you want to get to the end of it,” Scott said.

A 12 man recruiting class, six on offense, six on defense with nine of the players are from the Richmond area, but Scott is hoping to make an impact in the 757.

“We’ve been to every school in the Tidewater area and obviously we are going to recruit this area very, very heavily,” said Scott. “It just so happened that the bulk of our class was from Richmond, but that wasn’t by design by any stretch.”

Scott had to scramble to put together a staff and hit the recruiting trail, and he had a vision for what he was looking for.

“The main thing we wanted to do was get quality student athletes and fill positions of need,” Scott said. “We took a kid in almost every position group with the exception of a quarterback and we may still get one.”

A former head coach at Richmond and an assistant coach at Virginia, Scott comes to NSU after wrapping up a stint as head coach of Division 2 Virginia State, and despite a bigger budget in Division 1, when it comes to recruiting, there’s not much of a difference.

“It’s really all the same,” Scott said. “it’s all about building relationships and finding coaches and young men that trust you knowing that you will take care of them if they are part of your program.”
