NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a Newport News man is dead after driving a moped in the path of another vehicle Wednesday night.
Emergency dispatchers got a 911 call around 6 p.m. about a vehicle crash involving a moped, according to Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department.
When officers arrived at the scene — the intersection of 48th Street and Roanoke Avenue — they found the moped driver, 27-year-old Michael Torelle Patterson, with life-threatening injuries. McPherson said Patterson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.
Investigators believe the moped driver maneuvered around a vehicle stopped at a stop sign on 48th Street. As the moped entered the intersection, it collided with a Volvo traveling north on Roanoke Avenue.
McPherson said the driver of the moped was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
