Charges move forward in court for ODU rugby assault suspect

Chris Slade

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The charges against the man accused of attacking three Old Dominion University students during an off-campus party last November will move forward.

Chris Slade, 19, of Virginia Beach, was in a Norfolk courtroom for hearing Wednesday. Police charged him with three counts of aggravated malicious wounding. Two of those charges were certified. He was also charged with malicious wounding.

The victims were members of the school rugby team. One victim told 10 On Your Side he won’t return to the university because he does not feel safe.

Back on Nov. 2, Norfolk police responded to the 1500 block of Melrose Parkway, shortly before 1:30 a.m., for an aggravated assault near the school’s campus.

According to officers, three ODU rugby players suffered painful injuries during the assault outside an off-campus house. Witnesses say the students were assaulted after several men were trying to get into a private party, but the people inside were not letting them in. The victims say there were at least four possible attackers.

The team captain, Michael Rigual, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He was put on a respirator after the attack and even lost five teeth, said his father. He has since been taken off the respirator and has had plates put in his jaw. A second student suffered a fractured eye socket and a third student was also treated for injuries.
