NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested a man after he allegedly almost struck a police cruiser and led Newport News officers on a chase ending in Norfolk.
Police say a Newport News police officer was traveling southbound on Jefferson Avenue, in the area of Brick Kiln Boulevard, when Donte Demille Hampton turned right onto Jefferson Avenue and almost struck the marked police unit.
According to police, Hampton did not stop and led the officer on a chase that eventually ended in Norfolk when he and his passenger bailed from the vehicle.
Hampton and the 17-year-old female passenger were apprehended by police. Officers said the 17-year-old was holding Hampton’s 5-month-old daughter at the time of the incident. The relationship between Hampton and the 17-year-old female is unknown.
Hampton was charged with reckless driving, evade and elude police, suspended driver’s license and two counts of child neglect.
