6 dead in commuter train crash

VAHALLA, N.Y. (WAVY/NBC) — A fiery crash on the Metro-North Harlem line killed six people and left 12 injured outside New York City.

Officials tell NBC News the train hit an SUV on the tracks in the middle of the evening rush hour. The train was leaving New York City going north of the Harlem Line when it hit the vehicle in Valhalla, pushing that SUV about 150 yards up the track in a fiery collision.

An MTA spokesman said the driver was standing outside the SUV and was killed, along with five passengers on the train.

Rescuers used ladders to get people out of the cars. The line remains closed Tuesday night, as investigators try to determine how this all happened.
