KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — Charges are pending against a Kill Devil Hills homeowner after police say the suspect lit the house on fire and illegally shot a handgun.
Around 6:25 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a disturbance call along 6th Avenue, a neighborhood with mostly year-round residents, according to Sgt. J.C. Towler Jr. of the Kill Devil Hills Police Department. Neighbors reported a person was firing a gun or shooting off fireworks.
The first officers at the scene saw smoke coming from a home and called the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department. Crews extinguished the flames before they spread to any other building. Towler said the inside of the home was damaged by the fire, but there were no injuries.
Investigators determined the owner of the home had purposefully started the fire in a bedroom. The homeowner was taken into custody and found in possession of a concealed Lorcin .380 semiautomatic handgun, according to police.
Towler said, pending an evaluation, the homeowner will be charged with frequently burning a dwelling and discharging a firearm within town limits.
Police are confident this incident was not related to two recent significant fires in Kill Devil Hills: the fiery Econo Cleaning work van along Canal Drive on December 15 and the flames that destroyed Albemarle Landscaping equipment on January 13.
Anyone with information about those two fires is asked to call the police department directly or the Crime Line at 252-473-3111. You can also submit police tips at www.darecommunitycrimeline.org.
