NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Airlines canceled dozens of flights to and from Norfolk International Airport Monday because of a winter storm across the East Coast. Cancellations included Newark, New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
Robert Bowen, Deputy Executive Director of the Norfolk Airport Authority, said he received word that several airports planned to close early.
“We’re seeing a number of cancellations and delays from Boston on down to Washington, D.C. Based on the forecast that we’re seeing, those cancellations and delays will persist through the evening and possibly into tomorrow as well,” Bowen said.
He said the Norfolk Airport Authority was preparing sand trucks and de-icing materials as a precaution Monday.
Passenger Bryan Harris was trying to get to Denver and said he had already encountered delays and a mechanical issue by late afternoon.
“I think a lot of other flights were canceled, so then it’s like rerouting through to get to Dulles. It’s like, I can get there, but my flight would be missed, and so then they were going to fly me through Chicago, and I was like, ‘No way, nobody wants to go through Chicago in weather like this,” Harris said.
Bowen advised travelers or those picking up passengers to call the airline instead of the airport before heading out.
