Hampton PD: Man armed with pipe robbed tanning salon

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man accused of robbing a tanning salon.

Police say Matthew Garza, 22, of Newport News, armed with a pipe walked into Sunday’s Blue Box, in the 100 block of Coliseum Drive, and demanded money.

The man then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. There were no clients inside the salon at the time of the robbery and no one was injured.

Police say the theft happened on Jan. 22 around 9:46 p.m. The suspect is described is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 6’0, 200-210 pounds, 20-30 years old, dark hair, medium skin complexion and a mustache. He was last seen wearing a green jacket, multi-colored knit cap with a brim, blue jeans and white sneakers with red and black soles. The suspect has an unknown tattoo on the right side of his neck.

Garza’s last known address is in the first block of Dean Ray Court. He has warrants on file for one count of robbery from business and one count of burglary while armed.
