PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — People from across Hampton Roads came together on Saturday to surprise a complete stranger with kindness.
It all started last month when a heartbroken Portsmouth mom called 10 On Your Side. Someone broke into her home and stole all the Christmas gifts she’d bought for her daughters. But not long after her story aired on WAVY News, members of the Hampton Roads community decided to help.
“That’s crazy, like who would want to do that?” asked 18-year-old Alexis Davis of Suffolk, who donated to the family. “I couldn’t imagine being in that situation.
WAVY.com was there Saturday when the group of Good Samaritans met at California Cartage Company in Suffolk.
“As soon as I heard it, I knew the company was going to jump directly on this and do what they can to help,” said Chasity Pritchett of California Cartage Company.
“It’s great to be in a position to be able to give back,” said Muhammad Davis of Suffolk. “Hard work, and just believing in faith and believing in good people and it gives you the opportunity to to be able to give back.”
After meeting, the moment they’d all been waiting for happened: Carolyn Pettaway and one of her daughters walked through the door. The group gave them replacement gives, and the Pettaways were blown away by the kindness.
“I hope that these donations and things will be able to help the family get back on their feet,” said Jhory Miller of Suffolk Tidewater Staffing.
And even though it’s almost a month later, the Christmas in January could arguably be their best ever. The donations included a new Wii game, gift cards to Wal-Mart and Toys R Us, as well as some cash. Another donor has even volunteered to install a security system so the family can feel safer at home.
