NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Norfolk man entered an Alford plea Tuesday to a first-degree murder charge in connection with the stabbing death of Lena Elaine Smith last year.

Ulysses James, 50, was charged with killing Smith, 45, in her apartment on Tidewater Drive Jan. 3, 2014, according to authorities. Officers said the two had a relationship.

In Tuesday’s plea, James is acknowledging there is sufficient evidence for a conviction but isn’t admitting guilt. Police arrested him in May 2014.

James will go back to court March 20 for a pre-sentence report.
