NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The wanted man who barricaded himself in a Newport News hotel room Wednesday hung himself, according to a medical examiner.
Jawan T. Colson, 30, was wanted in Delaware for several felonies. U.S. marshals and police tried to arrest him at the Midtown Motel in the 10600 block of Jefferson Avenue, but he barricaded himself inside a room.
Around 11:45 a.m., the NNPD’s Tactical Operations Unit responded with negotiators, but they could not convince Colson to come out, according to police spokesman Lou Thurston. So, tear gas was used and police forced entry into the motel room.
Inside, Colson was unconscious. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. On Thursday, a medical examiner said Colson died from suicide by hanging.
The barricade situation lasted for several hours. Police initially believed there was a second person in the room, but once inside, police only found Colson.
Thurston said Colson was wanted in Georgetown, Delaware for the following charges:
- 3 counts rape
- 1 count strangulation
- 1 count unlawful imprisonment
- 1 count theft of a motor vehicle
- 1 count unlawful sexual contact
- 1 count theft of something valued under $1500
