Man arrested in Newport News first homicide in 2015

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man, who initially evaded police, was arrested Wednesday and charged in connection with Newport News’ first homicide of 2015.

Rishaud Vannoy Ben Powell, 28, is accused of killing Jerrod Reid New Year’s Day after Powell allegedly shot the 23-year-old victim at a local gas station, according to authorities. Officers got the call just before 9:30 p.m. Jan. 1 and found Reid suffering from a gunshot wound at a BP on Warwick Boulevard. Police then pursued Powell and another suspect who ditched their car and ran off.

Reid was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Powell from the 12600 block of Daybreak Circle is charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a press release from the Newport News Police Department.

Homicide detectives told 10 On Your Side they are looking to speak to anyone who was at the BP gas station New Year’s Day between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. They may call the Crime line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
