Family, dog displaced by Hampton house fire

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Four people and a dog were displaced after a fire at a one-story house Wednesday afternoon.

Just before 2 p.m., crews with the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue were dispatched to Cavalier Road, according to Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum. At the scene, firefighters found moderate smoke coming from the home, but all occupants had exited safely.

Chittum said the fire was contained and extinguished in about thirty minutes. It left damage to the hallway and attic of the home, and smoke damage throughout.

The residents told firefighters they were warned by a smoke alarm and their dog barking. One resident was treated at the scene with a minor injury after escaping through a bedroom window.

The American Red Cross is helping the residents. Chittum said the family’s two cats are still unaccounted for.

The Hampton Fire Marshal’s Office is still working to figure out what caused the fire.
