NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – It’s been 11 days since Christmas, but the Old Dominion basketball program got a late gift when they saw their name as the no. 25 team in the nation, according to the Associated Press. Still, even with many a Monarch faithful celebrating the program’s first ever Division I top 25 ranking, head coach Jeff Jones said he was “probably a grinch” about the whole thing.
To be fair, he explained why. “I understand that it’s a nice step for the team and certainly a nice recognition for the program,” said Jones after his Tuesday practice, “At the same time, for this basketball team, we need to remain focused on what we’re supposed to be doing and getting some acknowledgement doesn’t change that at all.”
His team doesn’t have a whole lot of time to start believing their own press. They’ll head down to Marshall on Thursday. The Thundering Herd (4-10, 0-1) are reeling, having lost their last four games, but Jones still expects a battle on the road.
“Anytime you go on the road and then going on the road for conference is doubly tough as we told them going down to Charlotte,” said Jones, “It’s big boy basketball, you’ve got to be ready to compete.”
The Monarchs tip off at 7:00 pm on Thursday, then have a quick turnaround to Western Kentucky on Saturday.
