Fitness centers prep for new year rush

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — January 1 is one of the busiest days of the year for fitness centers and gyms. Each year, they offer promotions to get all those folks in the door who made resolutions to lose weight and get fit.

10 On Your Side stopped by the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA on Wednesday, where staff member are gearing up for the rush of new customers on Thursday. They are having a special open house on Thursday with giveaways and special deals.

All the YMCA’s in South Hampton Roads have installed new equipment for the new year. If you’re planning on becoming a new member, here’s some advice.

“Be patient, be willing to ask questions, our staff is here, willing to help,” said YMCA District Vice President Adam Kahrl. “We’ve been doing a lot of training, getting our staff up and ready to guide people to the right place, you know, answer questions, provide the support they need to have success.”

For those of you who are regulars at the gym, the advice is also to be patient. Researchers estimate about 60 percent of gym memberships go unused. The crowds will die down and things should get back to normal by mid-February.
