2 Va. Aquarium sand tiger sharks died this month

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Two of the Virginia Aquarium’s oldest sand tiger sharks have died.

According to a news release from the Virginia Beach aquarium, Mystic was found at the bottom of the Norfolk Canyon Aquarium on Dec. 24. The shark acquired in 1999 was more than 20 years old.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that officials believe it’s likely the shark died of complications due to her advanced age.

Earlier in the month, another sand tiger shark named Double Notch was euthanized after the staff after the shark became ill. It was later determined she was anemic with a bacterial infection in her ovaries.

Double Notch came to the aquarium in 1995.

The aquarium has three other sand tiger sharks. Officials say sand tiger sharks typically live about 11 years in human care.
