VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach woman said her dog saved her with his life when three armed men broke into her home Monday night.
“I just can’t imagine who would do that, walk in your house with guns,” Ashe Lee Downey said.
Around 10 p.m. Monday, Downey was in her home along Carriage Hill Road when she heard screaming.
“We just heard men yelling ‘give me money,'” Downey said.
Downey was in her bedroom with her husband. Their roommate and his girlfriend were in the living room when men forced their way through the front door.
“The first one walked in with a gun pointed at him and told him to get down,” Downey said. “That’s when another walked in with another gun. At that point, that’s when they made him get down on the ground and they hit him in the back of the head with one of the guns.”
Not knowing what was happening and fearing the worst, Downey decided to send out her 3-year-old pit bull, Sheek. She was hoping the dog would scare the intruders off.
“As soon as he took off around the corner and down the hallway, shots were fired,” Downey said. “I believe around five shots.”
When the gunfire stopped, she heard more screams. This time she went to see what happened.
“I see my couch flipped over and my DVDs knocked on the floor,” she said. “My dog was just lying there, grasping for his last few breaths.”
Sheek died just a couple of minutes later. Downey said he was shot five times. The suspects got away empty-handed.
