HAMPTON, Va, (WAVY) – Sophomore Malia Tate-DeFreitas scored 19 while teammate Kyani White had 11, but it still wasn’t enough to take down the top team in women’s basketball. South Carolina, ranked no. 1 in the nation, took down Hampton University 69-49 on Wednesday night in front of an announced crowd of 4,000 at the Hampton Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates provided a test early, staying within striking distance for most of the first half. They enjoyed their only lead when Kenia Cole hit a 3-pointer that gave Hampton a 3-2 lead with 19:02 left. Hot shooting by Tate-DeFreitas kept the Lady Pirates in it, but ultimately, South Carolina’s size gave Hampton fits.
Four Gamecocks scored in double figures, led by Tiffany Mitchell’s 20 points.
The Lady Pirates fall to 3-6 and will be at James Madison on Saturday.
