NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police said someone shot a 15-year-old girl leaving a Newport News roller-skating rink Sunday night.
Around 11 p.m., the teenager was leaving the Peninsula Family Skating Center on Main Street when a suspect fired into the rear of the vehicle she was in, police said. Officers told 10 On Your Side they believe the victim was not the intended target. She was inside the vehicle with a relative.
The 15-year-old was taken to a local hospital and is stable and recovering. The shooting is still under investigation and no suspect has been identified.
Cindy Philpott, manager of the Peninsula Family Skating Center, said she was not at the rink that night.
“We just know that it was almost 45 minutes to an hour after we had closed,” Philpott said.
She said the center gave surveillance video to police, but she did not know what happened Sunday night. Police told WAVY.com the security video showed the suspect vehicle following the victim’s car just before the shooting.
Philpott said she was not sure if the victim had skated there earlier that night.
“Sunday night is ‘old school’ night. It’s more of an older crowd, so a 15-year-old here is kind of like, not normal,” she said.
Philpott said she hopes the shooting was an isolated incident.
“It devastates me. I hate it because we have a family business here and most of our customers are regulars, and I don’t want this to discourage them … We have a good time,” Philpott said.
Police officers will be at the rink on Sunday night to check on what is happening after hours, Philpott said.
