PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – In case you forgot, here are the specifics about the coming increase in tolls rates at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels.
As part of the contract between the Virginia Department of Transportation and its private partner, Elizabeth River Crossings, toll rates at the Elizabeth River Tunnels will go up by 25 cents on January 1, 2015. That’s a 33 percent increase during peak traffic hours and a 25 percent increase during non-peak traffic.
The new E-ZPass rates will be as follows:
Passenger vehicles (two axles, including motorcycles)
Off-Peak Period: $1
Peak Period: $1.25
Heavy vehicles (three or more axles, includes cars with trailers)
Off-Peak Period: $3
Peak Period: $5
For Pay-by-Plate drivers (who don’t use E-ZPass), the processing fee will go up by $2 per trip, in addition to the toll.
Tolls began at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels on Feb. 1, 2014. The ERC/VDOT contract allows for yearly toll increases of 3.5 percent or the rate of the Consumer Price Index, whichever is greater. That means drivers could pay as much as $21 per trip by the year 2070.
Peak Period is Monday – Friday, 5:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. All other times, including weekends and designated holidays are considered off peak.
