NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police say a man attacked a 13-year-old boy Friday morning at a Newport News middle school hitting the student with a plastic hubcap. Officers then found the suspect naked on the street.
A bus arrived early to Crittendon Middle and was waiting outside around 7:40 a.m. when students watched the 24-year-old suspect walk on campus with the wheel cover then slip, according to a city school spokeswoman Michelle Price. Price said students snickered at the man, which upset him enough that he went to one of the students and hit the boy.
The student’s parents were notified and the student was assessed for any injuries, officials said. The child was shaken but didn’t require any medical treatment and finished the day at school. The man with the hubcap went into Crittendon after the altercation and said something to administrators before walking off campus.
After leaving the school, the Newport News resident stripped off his clothes and entered a business in the first block of Tyler Avenue and put a large hole in the wall, according to police. Officers then located the naked man near Woodfin Road and Jefferson Avenue.
Criminal charges are pending. The suspect is at a local hospital for evaluation.
