SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Suffolk man was arrested Monday, accused of assaulting a police officer.
Around 4:30 p.m., 22-year-old Keith Duane Mitchell was stopped by a Suffolk police officer along Cripple Creek Lane because he smelled like marijuana, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.
Klink said Mitchell ran while the officer was trying to search him. After a foot chase, officers took Mitchell into custody.
During the incident, Mitchell allegedly kicked an officer several times, caused a pair of glasses to be broken, as well as a tear in a police uniform, Klink said.
He was charged with assault and battery of a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct, and two counts of destruction of property. Mitchell is being held at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
