Four auto part thefts reported in Oyster Point

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say thieves in Newport News are stealing catalytic converters.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, Newport News police took reports of stolen catalytic converters from four businesses — all in the Oyster Point area. Two dozen vehicles have been hit since August.

Police say the thieves are targeting big vehicles and it’s costing some business owners big bucks.

The thieves may be after the platinum inside catalytic converters, which is part of exhaust systems. Platinum currently sells for just over $1,200 an ounce. found local scrap yards are taking the part for about $40 a piece.
