NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say at least five people were shot near a Newport News restaurant Tuesday night.
Just before 8:30 p.m., dispatchers got a 911 call about a shooting in the 6100 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department. That’s in the parking lot of the Deja Vu Restaurant and Lounge.
At the scene, officers were told there had been a fight and that multiple gunshots had been fired.
Shortly afterwards, Thurston said a local hospital notified the department of three gunshot victims who had just arrived at the emergency room. Officers then found a fourth victim at nearby Crittenden Middle School, who was taken to an area hospital.
Later, the Hampton VA Hospital alerted police of a fifth gunshot victim, who had arrived at the medical center and was transported to another hospital.
All injuries were not life-threatening.
The investigation revealed the victims had been shot during a fight between two groups of people, and all five victims were part of the same group. The victims were all men, ages 28, 32, 42, 45, and 59. Initially, none of the victims were cooperating with the investigation, according to Police.
One person was detained by officers, questioned, and released. Police don’t yet know if that person was involved in the shooting.
Thurston told WAVY.com there have been 275 calls for service at Deja Vu, since January 1 of this year.
A former waitress at the restaurant, Zoe Whitaker, said the shooting was shocking. “Seeing glass in the parking lot, damaged things, it’s been heartbreaking, honestly,” she said.
But nearby resident, Erica Smith, said, “people are under frustration because of the time of year, and it takes just a snap to get mad. It happens.”
