10 On Your Side viewers help catch larceny suspect

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police arrested a man for breaking into cars in a Virginia Beach neighborhood, and it was a 10 On Your Side report that helped bring him to justice.

“I’m glad I got the cameras,” resident Maurice Browne said.

There was a reason why Browne wanted to show 10 On Your Side his home surveillance video from late October.

“Police can’t do anything without a name,” Browne said. “You can have all the video in the world, but if they can’t put a name on it, you have really good video with no name.”

Browne lives along Beech Street. On October 28, his camera captured a suspect breaking into his neighbors’ cars. A total of 16 cars were broken into that night.

“I thought of 10 On Your Side, and you were right on it,” Browne said. “Within a few minutes, you had emailed me back, and that’s how we got there.”

10 On Your Side showed the video during our late newscasts November 14.

“The story aired at 10 and 11. Shortly after 11 o’clock Crime Solvers starting receiving tips right away,” said Public Information Officer Jimmy Cason, with the Virginia Beach Police Department. “Numerous tips came in identifying the suspect in this case.”

Those tips lead to 20-year-old Dorian Faticoni-Manolas.

“For the detectives that I’ve spoken to, when we receive a tip that quickly it’s like Christmas to them,” Cason added.  “We were not expecting to get a break in the case so soon.”

Faticoni-Manolas was arrested and is facing 17 different charges including several grand larcenies.  Police have connected him to at least 11 of the break ins.  He is being held inside the Virginia Beach Jail without bond.  He will make is next court appearance January 8.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Browne said. “I said, ‘yes, way to go 10 On Your Side.’”

For Browne and his neighbors, news of the arrest brings some comfort. And for some, it also supplies compassion for the man accused.

“You hope this young man stops doing what he is doing,” Browne added. “Hope he turns his life around, gets a job  and does the right thing in society.”

Browne hasn’t captured any crimes on home surveillance camera since that night, but if he does, he knows where to take it.

“I can tell you this, I’m definitely on 10 On Your Side’s side as a result of this,” Browne said. “I didn’t realize you guys did this. It is very comforting.”
