NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Two Virginia State Police troopers were hospitalized Wednesday morning after their cruiser was hit from behind and then shoved into the jersey wall on I-64.

The multi-car incident happened while the officers were responding to a traffic accident on the left shoulder of the interstate in the westbound lanes near Jefferson Avenue, according to authorities.

Benjamin Brockenburr, 67, driving a 1994 Ford pickup truck couldn’t stop and hit the police car from behind and push it into the jersey wall.

After Brockenburr struck it, a 2011 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Matthew Weiner, also hit the law enforcement vehicle, the release stated.

No charges were made at the scene of the accident, but charges are pending, officers said.
