Nags Head police chief charged with assaulting his wife

CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – Nags Head’s police chief has been arrested and accused of assaulting his wife early Friday morning, officers say.

Currituck County Sheriff Susan Johnson said deputies served Chief Kevin Brinkley Nov. 28 and charged him with assaulting a female.

Chris Carroll has lived near Brinkley and his wife for seven years in Nags Head. Carroll said he even drives his daughters and Brinkley’s stepson home from the school bus stop.

Carroll said he was shocked when he heard what happened. He didn’t hear or see anything out of the ordinary when the assault was reported.

“I’ve never heard a bad word about him or his wife,” he said. “They both seem like pretty cool people and have always been nice to us.”

Brinkley is out on a $5,000 unsecured bond, according to authorities.

Brinkley was not immediately available for comment.
