NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – It’s arguably the biggest college basketball rivalry in the commonwealth. And for the 90th time, VCU and Old Dominion will meet on the basketball court in a sold out showdown at the Ted on Saturday.
Back in the Sun Belt and CAA days, the Rams and Monarchs faced each other twice (and sometimes three times) a year.
Now that they are in different conferences they only meet once a year – The Monarchs have lost to the Rams 4 times in a row.
Senior Richard Ross was a redshirt freshman and didn’t dress the last time ODU beat VCU, he’s excited for one final shot at the Rams.
“Of course it means a lot to me, I would love to go out there with a win, Ross said. “This is the last opportunity I’m going to get at these guys in a regular season game so I would love to go out there and get this win.”
VCU comes into the game ranked 14th in the nation. ODU has 10 wins against nationally ranked team in 37 attempts.
Second year coach Jeff Jones has led ODU to a 4-1 record so far with wins over Richmond and LSU. He got his first taste of the VCU rivalry last season and he learned a lot in that first meeting.
“Being new here, I wasn’t aware how heated the rivalry was until I got here a year ago,” Jones said. “It’s very clear that this is a big game, obviously a lot of great games in the past as CAA rivals and I think it’s a really good thing that we are able to continue playing this series.”
Tip-off is 2:00 at the Ted Constant Center. The game is sold out.
