WILMINGTON, N.C. (WAVY) – A 62-year-old man was rescued from a sailboat Thanksgiving morning about 100 miles east of Kill Devil Hills.
The Coast Guard received the call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday reporting a distress message from the “Austina.” The report stated the boat operator fell and hurt his hip.
But when rescue crews reached the man, they were unable to hoist him up to the helicopter because of inclement weather. The helicopter went back, but crews remained on scene throughout the night to monitor the situation.
Around 7 a.m. Thursday, a second helicopter was launched and medevaced the man to Air Station Elizabeth City. He was then taken to Sentara Albermarle Medical Center.
