CNU one win away from final 8

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Christopher Newport will try for history on Saturday. The Captains are in the Division III playoffs and will try to advance to the round of 8 for the first time in school history.

CNU (8-3) won its opening round playoff game last week, rallying from 19 points down to defeat Delaware Valley 29 to 26.
Coach Matt Kelchner’s squad has a tough task ahead, their opponent in the Sweet 16 is undefeated Widener from Pennsylvania.

“I think from judging from being around the guys since Saturday they are excited about it,” Kelchner said. “They’ve got a bounce in their step, they know the magnitude of it and I know as a coach, heck, this is what you coach for. ”

Widener had a one point in its playoff win last week, but Widener has a tough defense, forcing 36 turnovers.

“We know the stakes of the game and we are not satisfied getting one playoff win,” said senior Cameron Barlow. “We’re really motivated to go there and get another win, they are a great team but we know we can beat them.”

Kickoff is Saturday at 12:00 in Chester, Pa.
