Thanksgiving shoppers set up camp days in advance

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Thanksgiving is one day away, which means shoppers looking for big deals are already camped out.

Best Buy always seems to attract campers in the days leading up to Turkey Day.

“We just started off early,” said Sam Smith. “Took a week of vacation and have been in line since Monday morning.”

Smith and his wife, Karen, got to the Landstown Commons Best Buy in Virginia Beach on Monday. They pitched a huge tent. At one point they had a heater and a TV inside the tent, too. However, the fire marshal made them remove both on Wednesday.

Smith and others camping out across town are hoping to snag a 50 inch TV that will be on sale for $199. The TV is normally around $600.

“That’s a pretty substantial savings for me,” said Smith. “I don’t know how most people look at it.”

The Smiths may be on to something. According to multiple market researchers for the Associated Press, the best deals will be found on Thanksgiving Day and not on Black Friday. Some of the best online sales will be on Thursday, too.

Smith and others waiting at Best Buy on Independence Boulevard said the savings are worth it. Plus, they said they’re not buying for themselves. Smith said he’s buying the TV for a military member he knows. Others said they try to score the big deals for their family.
