NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two lanes of westbound Interstate 64, just east of Jefferson Avenue, were shut down for hours after a multi-vehicle crash involving a Virginia State Police cruiser, Wednesday morning.
Sergeant M. Anaya with Virginia State Police says a VSP cruiser was responding to a traffic incident when a 1994 Ford pickup truck, driven by 67-year-old Benjamin Brockenburr, was unable to stop and struck the back of the cruiser, pushing it into a barrier. A third vehicle, a 2011 Jeep Wrangler, then struck the front passenger side of the cruiser.
Anaya said there were two troopers inside the police cruiser. Both troopers were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Brokenburr was charged with reckless driving, and driving too fast for road conditions. Anaya said no other charges will be made.
