Here was the scenario heading into this past Saturday. Virginia Tech needed only one more win out of its final two games (at Wake Forest, home against Virginia) in order to make it to a bowl game. Virginia, riding a four-game losing streak since starting off 4-2, needed to win its last two outings at home against Miami and at Virginia Tech.
Here was the scenario Sunday morning.
Virginia Tech, in maybe the ugliest outing of Head Coach Frank Beamer’s career, stumbled and bumbled their way to a 6-3 double overtime loss at Wake, who won their first ACC game of the season. Virginia rolled past 7-point favorite Miami on Senior Night at Scott Stadium. Now each team needs only win one more game to make the postseason. That one game, however, will be against each other.
At 8:00 pm on Friday night, under the lights at Lane Stadium, the Hoos (5-6, 3-4) will meet the Hokies (5-6, 2-5) with a trip to a bowl game on the line. The winner will be invited to a bowl game, while the loser will head home for the offseason.
