Police arrest suspect in ODU rugby assault case

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk Police have arrested a man in connection to an assault where three Old Dominion University students were injured earlier this month.

On Nov. 18, detectives arrested 19-year-old Chris Slade of Virginia Beach and charged him with three counts of malicious wounding.

Back on Nov. 2, Norfolk Police responded to the 1500 block of Melrose Parkway, shortly before 1:30 a.m., for an aggravated assault near the ODU campus.

According to police, three ODU rugby players suffered painful injuries during the assault outside an off-campus house. Witnesses say the students were assaulted after several men were trying to get into a private party, but the people inside were not letting them in. The victims say there were at least four possible attackers.

The team captain, Michael Rigual, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He was put on a respirator after the attack and even lost five teeth, said his father. He has since been taken off the respirator and has had plates put in his jaw. A second student suffered a fractured eye socket and a third student was also treated for injuries.

Police have yet to release a booking photo for Slade.
