NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY) — A report of a man carrying a rifle near Crittenden Middle School caused a brief lockdown around dismissal time Friday.
Newport News City Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price told WAVY.com the lockdown lasted about 10 minutes, just before 3 p.m. She said the school sent phone messages to parents to let them know what was going on.
Newport News police said the weapon turned out to be a BB gun, which is not considered a firearm.
Police also said the 36-year-old man carried the BB gun on South Avenue near the school. The man was not charged because the BB gun is not considered a firearm, but officers are still looking into the incident.
