Portsmouth murder suspect arrested in N.C.

UPDATE: Portsmouth police took custody of Gordon Thursday, July 9 in Washington, N.C.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The man suspected in a recent Portsmouth murder has been arrested in North Carolina.

Lawrence L. Gordon Jr., 33, is in police custody in Washington, N.C., awaiting extradition to Virginia, according to Detective Misty Holley with Portsmouth police.

Gordon faces charges in the murder of Melvin D. Brown, who was found suffering from a gunshot wound along Queen Street on Oct. 25. He later died at a local hospital.

In Portsmouth, Gordon is charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was arrested in Washington for unrelated charges from that jurisdiction.
