Police investigate shooting near Va. Beach sports bar

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach police are investigating after shots were fired near SideLines Sports Bar on Holland Road, early Thursday morning.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from inside SideLines at 1:20 a.m., according to VBPD spokeswoman Tonya Borman, and officers responded.

At the scene, the victim told police he was in an altercation with a woman he didn’t know when an unidentified man got involved. Security intervened, and the victim went to his vehicle to leave.

As the victim was leaving, police say the unidentified man fired a gun at the victim’s car. Police say the victim returned fire at the suspect and was then hit by a bullet in the arm.

Bartender Navi Gordon told WAVY.com he heard two shots as he was preparing to close for the night.SideLines Sports Theater FB post

“Everybody was just on the floor, and we were confused, asking what was going on. Okay, everything in here is good,” Gordon said.

The victim pulled into a 7-Eleven near S. Independence Boulevard and Edwin Drive and waited until medics arrived. He was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Around 10 a.m., a post on SideLine’s Facebook page claimed the incident didn’t happen outside the bar. It said the shooting happened on the streets parallel to SideLines. It goes on to talk about bullet holes found in other places, and even claims the following: “None of these shootings took place outside our restaurant, and no bullet casings nor weapons were found on the entire SideLines premises, from the back of the building, all the way throughout the parking lot.”

10 On Your Side took video of police evidence markers in SideLines parking lot, although we don’t know what the coordinating evidence was.

10 On Your Side’s Brandi Cummings asked Gordon who wrote the status posted by SideLines Facebook page. He said it was a patron who was at the bar Wednesday night.

The bar owner, Nick Ford, would not answer any questions when 10 On Your Side asked about the post. Virginia Beach police would also not answer any questions when 10 On Your Side asked for clarity on the Facebook post.

Sidelines reopened at 4 p.m. Thursday for business.
