NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man is in jail after authorities say he shot multiple rounds at a police vehicle early Saturday. The suspect denied the shooting, during a jailhouse interview Monday.
Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Norfolk officers said 20-year-old Amos Howard Jr. fired shots from a handgun at an unmarked police car. The vehicle was stopped at a stop sign in the 1700 block of Vernon Drive, at the time.
Three on-duty officers were inside the vehicle, and as Howard was shooting, one of the officers returned fire, police say. Howard attempted to flee the area, but was taken into custody, following a foot pursuit.
Howard has been charged with three counts of attempted malicious wounding, three counts of use of a firearm, three counts of assault on a police officer, shooting into an occupied vehicle and conspiracy.
During a jailhouse interview on Monday, Howard denied firing any shots. He told WAVY.com there were several groups of people in the area of the shooting when it happened. He said he was with a group of people and the next thing he knew, he was being tackled by police.
Police said there were no injuries as a result of this incident. Howard told WAVY.com officers beat him while they were taking him into custody and he displayed some cuts and bruise on his leg.
Howard is held with no bond at the Norfolk City Jail.
