PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Elizabeth River Tunnels Project crews reached a major milestone in the construction of the new Midtown Tunnel this week.
The first piece of the tube is now in place on the Portsmouth side of the Elizabeth River. It took crews about 18 hours to complete the process.
There are still 10 more elements that need to be put into place. ERT says they will put one in place every five weeks; the next one is scheduled for placement sometime next month.
The new tunnel is expected to be complete by December 2016.
