Neighbor’s security camera catches truck thieves in action

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police are looking for a truck thief and they have surveillance video of the crime.

The crime happened Sunday, October 19 just after 3:30 a.m. Surveillance video shows three people walking towards a parked truck on Knightsbridge Way. They go out of the frame for a bit, then the lights on a truck come on. Eventually, the suspects drove away with the truck.

WAVY.com talked to Jack Nafpliotis, who owns the security cameras that produced the video. He said the suspects looked like professionals.

“You see two individuals, one wearing a hoodie, the other one wearing a sort of like a night watch cap,” Nafpliotis said. “And then you notice he puts his hand over his face, like this, towards my house, so he’s obviously trying to hide his face from my cameras. So, obviously these two have staked the place out.”

Nafpliotis also told WAVY.com he installed the cameras to protect his property, but it’s comforting to know he’s also helping his neighbors.

“Well, it’s not just helping myself out, it’s helping the community out,” he said. “I mean, obviously, the world’s changed. So, we have to protect ourselves.”

Police tracked down the truck in Chesapeake with a suspect inside. They are still looking for the other two suspects.
