Fire in Suffolk field causes over $50k in damages

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A cotton picker caught on fire Sunday afternoon, and the flames destroyed part of a cotton field in Suffolk.

Around 3:30 p.m. Oct. 26, firefighters went out to the field at Route 58 and the 1200 block of Longstreet Lane in the rural Holland Borough. The blaze originated in the picker machine causing about $50,000 of damage and an additional $1,500 damage to the cotton module.

Crews put out the fire about 10 minutes later. It had burned less than an acre of the cotton field, according to authorities.

One lane of Route 58 eastbound was closed briefly.
