NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk elementary school went on lockdown Friday morning, while police were chasing down a man wanted for drug charges.

Just after 11 a.m., Norfolk police say vice and narcotics investigators were trying to arrest a man near Oceanair Elementary School, when he got away, causing a foot pursuit.

The suspect, 22-year-old Stanley Ruffin, ran onto the school’s back field, and the school was put on lockdown for about 20 minutes, as a precaution. The lockdown was lifted when Ruffin was taken into custody.

Ruffin was charged with distribution of heroin, possession of a firearm with intent to distribute heroin, possession of heroin within 1,000 feet of a school, and concealed weapon. He is being held at Norfolk City Jail.
