PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Three people sent out a distress call to the Coast Guard Wednesday afternoon as their 30-foot craft dragged anchor in four-foot seas near Cape Charles.

The three felt seasick as their sailboat, the Mary K, rocked in 25-knot winds around 2 p.m. Oct. 23. With a cat, dog and three people on board, a Coast Guard helicopter crew lowered a rescue swimmer who helped each person and pet into the rescue basket, the release stated.

Weather on scene when rescue crews arrived was reported at 45-knot winds and nine-foot seas, according to the Coast Guard.

The aircrew flew the survivors to Air Station Elizabeth City in good condition. The sailboat was left at sea until the owners make arrangements to retrieve it.
