PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — 23 young football players got a big surprise Tuesday night, thanks to a generous donation from a Portsmouth church.
“Tonight we want you to know that we’re helping you reach your goal. This is a check for $7,000,” said Melvin Marriner, pastor of Grove Church.
The Mitey Mites are one of two teams in the country selected to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Florida, which will air on ESPN. They needed $10,000 by Tuesday to play, but after bake sales and car washes, they only raised about $900.
Marriner got in touch with 10 On Your Side because he wanted to help.
“I was home, watching WAVY 10, as usual. The plea came out to help these kids get to Florida for a national championship. I sat there, I thought about it, I said this is a great opportunity for us to put our love into action,” Marriner said.
The team president said the Mitey Mites still would like to raise a total of $21,000 by the time they play in December. The team set up a GoFundMe account, which has brought in about $500 so far.
The Pop Warner Superbowl starts Saturday, December 6. 68 games are held during the six-day event. The teams selected to go also get a trip to Disney, included in the price.
